Every patient who suffers from a type of mesothelioma contracts different signs and symptoms. This is mostly due to the fact that different types of mesothelioma affect different areas of the body. Patients are able to feel discomfort in a variety of ways. On the other hand, some individuals have no idea that they are infected with the disease because signs and symptoms are unclear or non-existent. Some do not take into consideration that they may have mesothelioma because the symptoms often times resemble other types of illnesses that are not as complicated and dangerous as mesothelioma. Those individuals who were exposed to asbestos material in their homes or workplaces many years ago are most likely to be contracting symptoms of mesothelioma in later years of their life. Individuals who feel as thought they are experiencing symptoms of mesothelioma should be checked by a doctor immediately. Diagnosis of symptoms at earlier stages shows a more positive outcome in the treatment process and prognosis for most patients.
There are many organs of the body that can become infected with mesothelioma cancer. One of the rarest forms of mesothelioma is pericardial, which affects the protective lining around the heart. When a person develops pericardial mesothelioma, they begin to exhibit cancerous growths along the tissues of the heart. Most of the signs and symptoms of this illness are similar to those of cardiovascular disease. This makes it difficult for a patient to determine what is making them feel sick. Since this type of mesothelioma is so rare, doctors find it hard to diagnose properly and determine how asbestos fibers have become lodged in that area. It is most likely that doctors will find other types of mesothelioma, such as secondary lung cancer. Often times, people develop symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma after it has already contaminated the lining of the lungs and has spread to the heart area. Symptoms that are most prevalent with patients who suffer from pericardial mesothelioma include chest pain, cough, shortness of breath, chest palpitations and irregular heart beat.
Proper diagnosis and treatment are important for the patient because this type of cancer is so rare. The doctor may run common tests such as a CT scan, x-ray or biopsy. Image testing is important because it allows the doctors to see the exact location, size and severity of the damage done to the pericardium or other areas that are potentially infected. Unfortunately, there is no reversal to this type of cancer. Doctors can determine different prognosis, depending on the individual and the severity of the case. Most of the time, cancerous cells cannot be completely removed from the infected area (through surgery or other methods of treatment) but doctors are able to keep the patient as comfortable as possible during their treatment and rehabilitation time period.
