How and Why People are Diagnosed for Pericardial Mesothelioma

Thousands of new mesothelioma cases are prevalent every year. More people are diagnosed with mesothelioma complications at later stages of the cancer because of their unawareness to the likelihood of their contamination by asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma in any kind poses life threatening complications to anyone who contracts it. Fortunately, pericardial mesothelioma is one of the types that are the most rare and less likely to be diagnosed by doctors. It is important to understand that catching mesothelioma in its early stages is much easier to treat than if found in later stages. The earlier it is detected the more likely patients are to respond properly to treatments and medications.

Most individuals ask why their heart was infected if mesothelioma is contracted by inhalation of fibers into the lungs. What most individuals do not realize is that mesothelioma, like any other cancer, has a capability of spreading to other areas of the body. This is especially true for mesothelioma cancer because it is often not detected until later stages. By the time mesothelioma is detected, there is a large chance that it has metastasized (or spread) to other areas of the body infecting areas, such as the heart, to hazardous cells that multiply rapidly. When vital organs are disrupted because of rapidly producing cancerous cells, abnormalities occur and cause severe complications with normal body functions. However, doctors have noted that the link between pericardial mesothelioma and asbestos is not 100%, but have noted that it is one of the leading causes.

Asbestos inhalation of fibers does not necessarily stop at the lungs. The tiny hazardous material is able to reach into the linings of different areas of the body because of the tendencies for these areas to be able to trap different substances. Doctors are unclear of how inhaled substances can make its way into the pericardium because there is no direct path to the heart. Some doctors suggest that asbestos fibers literally push themselves through the lining and make their way through the pleural (lung lining) to the pericardium, causing scaring and inflammation of the cavity. Others argue that the hazardous particles are carried through the blood stream directly into the pericardial cavity. Once the fibers become trapped around the heart, it is more likely that patients will experience different side effects and symptoms because of how the heart impacts the body’s immune system.

It is important to remember that most people are exposed to asbestos, not by their own will, but their home and work environments. Compensation and treatment are readily available to those patients who are suffering from this disease. There is a plethora of legal and medical support for mesothelioma victims. Since pericardial mesothelioma is a very rare case, victims should be well-educated on different symptoms and side effects in order to make a proper diagnosis with their doctor and determine the correct treatment method.
